Quilt Pattern Tips and Tricks: Mosaic Ornaments Quilt Part 4

Updated: Mar 29

Welcome to Part 4 of the tips and tricks series for the Mosaic Ornaments Quilt! This post series is partly to provide extra insights into this pattern and partly to function as a sew-a-long. You can find Part 1 here, Part 2 here, and Part 3 here. You can buy the quilt pattern from the patterns page on my website. If you're following along for the sew-a-long, this is the schedule:

Week 4: Making Ornaments 3 and 4

Week 5: Putting it all together!

We are up to Week 4. This week we're focusing on making our ornament blocks, specifically the ornaments 3 and 4 blocks. Most of what we need for this week's sewing has already been covered in last week's blog, so make sure to read it through for a refresher. Read ahead for some specific tips for this week's blocks. And once again - apologies for the photos in the post, most of my sewing these days is done at night after the kids are in bed!

In this blogpost:

Getting Started

We'll start by gathering our mini blocks and fabric for our blocks. I waited to cut my strips and blocks for ornament 4 until I was ready to sew my blocks. Because my quilt is the throw size Mosaic Ornaments quilt, there are LOTS of ornament 4 blocks, which means lots of squares and strips! Leaving it until I am ready to work with them meant that there was less chance that I will lose something.

Making the Blocks

As we did with our ornament 1 & 2 blocks, we'll use chain piecing to piece most of our blocks. The pattern also has instructions for strip piecing, which can seem intimidating if you haven't encountered it before, but it's pretty great! Strip piecing is a great way to avoid sewing little bits of fabric together by sewing looooong strips of fabric together and then cutting to size. Make sure to shorten your stitch length on your machine so end stitches don't unravel and you should be good to go.

Don't forget to nest your seams! This can be a game changer with the centre part of ornament 3 and the ornament 4 blocks as it's the best way to get those points between the small squares and the big squares super neat and crisp.

Things to watch out for

Reading all this it might seem like this week's sewing is a breeze compared to last week's sewing. And in many ways that is true. This week is mostly straightforward. One thing to watch out for is the layout, especially for the corner pieces of ornament 3. When I made the trial version for this block, I did not pay attention and ended up sewing them on incorrectly! Oops!

Thankfully, it still doesn't detract from the overall look of the pattern, and it turned out okay once it was sewn into the quilt. You can find photos of this quilt on my Instagram and on the page for the pattern.

That's it for this week! Next week we put it all together. It's going to look amazing. If you would like to get a head start on next week's sewing, get those sashing strips cut and prepped. Make sure to press all your blocks as well!

Happy Sewing!
